Rayos Magos is a local Chicano artist born and raised in San Jose, CA. The name of Rayos Magos comes from a play on the famous Mexican holiday celebrating the three kings/wiseman ( Los Reyes Magos). Though not religious, Rayos was inspired by the magic surrounding this holiday when living abroad in Mexico City for two years. In Spanish, Rayos translates as rays as well as Mexican slang for “damn, darn, shoot”, while Magos translates as “magic, magician, and prophet”. Therefore, the combination of words is taken to represent the artist's personality and drive to magically create something from nothing. Rayos Magos takes his inspiration from spirituality, psychology, and philosophy. With a background in psychology Rayos utilizes his deeper understanding and appreciation of the human psyche as the basis of his representational work. Rayos unifies his interests in painting, mixed media, printmaking, collage, and visual arts in order to represent imagery that captures the inner psycho-spiritual world. Rayos hopes his work communicates a deeper sense of humanity and connection to the universe.

Specifically touching on the subjects of resilience, perseverance, accessibility, and movement, the exhibition Fuerza (Strength) will showcase the work of local artists and what they've created during shelter in place and 2020. This exhibition will also showcase how in these unprecedented times artists have adjusted to the current circumstances and created work as a means to resist our current landscape be it to preserve their family and health, or as a political response to this election year. Elizabeth Blancas, Jesus Barraza, Melanie Cervantes, Rayos Magos, Ruby Bloo, Felix Quintana, and Stephany Sanchez will virtually share their work in an online gallery open to the public, going live on December 4th, 2020- February 19th, 2021.
