We hope you’ll join us for our latest exhibition, ENVIANDO FLORES A MI TIERRA! Opening on Dec. 1 from 6-8 pm ✨⁠

ENVIANDO FLORES A MI TIERRA, loosely translated to “sending flowers back to my homeland”, features the works of Sofía Córdova, Delvin Lugo, and Christian Rodriguez. This new exhibition centers around the idea of home and how it shapes us. How does one pay respect to both our motherland and who we have become outside of it, reconciling the duality of two realities. This exhibition will feature dynamic paintings, photography, and mixed media works, uplifting the stories and experiences of the Afro-Latinx identity. ⁠

ENVIANDO FLORES A MI TIERRA, loosely translated to “sending flowers back to my homeland”, features the works of Sofía Córdova, Delvin Lugo, and Christian Rodriguez. Honoring their origins while embracing the journey of the Latino diaspora, all three artists capture similarly unique stories about the transformative nature of immigration. What happens when one leaves behind the familiar for the unknown? How does one choose their new place of belonging? How do we continue to appreciate the memory of what once was, while living through all that was left behind?

We Have Iré is a bilingual musical play that tells the true stories of Black Caribbean Spanish-speaking immigrants living in the United States, and their influence on and experience with American culture—a poet, a musician, a dancer, and a DJ—all Cuban. We Have Iré looks at the challenges of being an immigrant artist and establishing one’s voice in a new country. ⁠

Since his arrival to New York in 1999, Cuban saxophonist, percussionist, composer Yosvany Terry has been making a difference in contemporary music. His innovative work, a unique confluence of Cuban roots music and jazz. He recently received the Yerba Buena Gardens Festival Commission for Noches de Parranda and the Harlem Stage commission to write the music for the opera Makandal. His albums include the Grammy Nominated New Throned King, Today’s Opinion, Ancestral Memories, and We Have Iré Original Cast Recording. ⁠

Ramón Ramos Alayo (Monchi) is a dancer, teacher, choreographer, and the founder and artistic director of the Alayo Dance Company and CubaCaribe. As the principal dancer with Danza del Caribe and Narciso Medina Contemporary Dance Company, he has performed in Cuba, Europe, Canada, Belize and the United States. ⁠
Ramos was selected by the Cuban government to study dance in Santiago de Cuba at age eleven, which led him to earn a Master's in contemporary and folkloric dance and dance education from the Havana’s National School of Art. He was. Since moving to California, he has performed with Robert Henry Johnson, Kim Epifano, Sara Shelton Mann, Joanna Haigood/Zaccho Dance and Robert Moses’ Kin. ⁠

Born and raised in Cuba, DJ Leydis combines contemporary hits with a distinct fusion of Latin flavors, R&B classics and roots reggae. She was involved in the inception of the Cuban Hip-Hip Movement and has organized some of Cuba’s most respected events and programs. She co-founded Omegas Kilay, a Havana based Hip hop Theater Collective and co-created Cuba’s first all-female DJ Mixtape. She has worked with Erykah Badu, Questlove of the Roots, and other iconic US artists. ⁠

About MACLA

MACLA is an inclusive contemporary arts space grounded in the Chicano/Latino experience that incubates new visual, literary and performance art in order to engage people in civic dialogue and community transformation.
