Cristal González Ávila
Cristal González Ávila is a performer, playwright, and director born and raised in Watsonville, California. The daughter of campesinos and a first-generation Chicana, her work is deeply rooted in honoring her antepasados, cultura, and the lived experiences of working-class communities. Through theater, film, and storytelling, Cristal brings intergenerational narratives to life—on stage, on screen, and in community. Her playwriting credits include La Sombra, La Cortina de la Lechuga, Piernas: The Story Between Our Legs, and Luz: Senior Stories—works that explore themes of domestic violence, housing justice, embodiment, and cultural resilience. She is also a founding member of Xerocuadro, a creative filmmaking collective amplifying community voices through performance and film. Her short film Color Cielo continues to screen at film festivals internationally. She was a Top 8 finalist for the Nosotros x NBC Monologue Slam, with her monologue Ropa Sucia slated for release in December 2025. Her play PIERNAS will be produced at Hartnell College, and two additional short plays will be produced locally in November 2025. Cristal is a 2022 NALACquerx, a 2025 NPN New Creative Grant recipient, and a San Benito Arts Council HeART Award honoree, recognized for her commitment to arts and social justice. She believes in the transformative power of theater, the necessity of creative expression for all children, and the healing potential of art in community. Her chapbook, Pedacitos: little pieces, was published by Ocote Libre Press in June 2025. www.cristalgonzalezavila.com
